![]() ![]() I read somewhere that a T34, a much cruder tank took 8700 man hours to build. Chrysler assembled 750 Shermans a month with 6000 people (6000x48hrs wk x 50 wks)/750 x 12 = 1600 hrs per tank plus the labour on making all the parts. Alternately production man hours would give a meaningful comparison as man hours relate to how long a tank sits on a factory floor and attracts electricity and all the other overheads. The true comparison should be based on purchasing power parity, or what will a Mark buy in Germany versus a Dollar in the US. I believe something akin to that is going on here as dollars and marks were not convertible or being exchanged during WWII. We know that the Germans overvalued their Mark to the Frank, doubling the exchange rate to cut their costs in France. The problem in currency conversions is based on the conversion rate and who picked it. It would easily cost 10 times what a colt 1911, a weapon which was stamped with little machining required. This is impossible as a lugar was entirely machined and possibly is the most expensive mass production handgun ever made based on the time, effort and inputs. Click to expand.I have always wanted to challenge these cost comparisons.Īt one point it is claimed that a colt 1911 cost $15 and a Lugar $13. ![]()
